HBO's True Detective Featuring the NEX-5

Image
Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin Eric "Marty" Hart and the NEX-5 First let me say that I have not finished True Detective yet so please do not say anything about the story. We saw the camera on a tripod instantly featured during the interrogation scenes. The NEX-5 was used to record the interviews of Detective Hart and Detective Rustin Spencer "Rust" Cohle played by Matthew McConaughey. True Detective ended the 1st season with 8 episodes - will the NEX make it to the next season?

Canon EOS Autofocus on Sony NEX?

Image
Canon 40mm STM Activates NEX Autofocus Points Here is a video from Muk Camera Service showing a Canon EOS 40mm STM lens on the NEX-5. The EOS to NEX E-mount adapter seems to allow for autofocus, which is a first. The previous EOS to Nex smart adapter by Conurus can only control the aperture on EOS lenses. The EOS lenses must be focused manually. Could the stepper motor, STM, in the Canon 40mm lens aid in allowing NEX cameras control autofocus? We do not have any details except for the video below. Image
Sony NEX-5 with MTO 1000mm f/10 Mirror Lens Here is a 54 year old MTO Grand Prix 1000mm f/10 fixed aperture mirror lens on the Sony NEX-5. It gives an equivalent FOV of 1500mm on the 23.4 x 15.6mm APS-C sensor. The lens is an M39 screw mount lens and is easily adaptable to the NEX E-mount. The lens weighs in at around 8 lbs so tripod shooting is a must unless you've won Mr. Olympia eight times in a row. Sony NEX-5 with Celestron C8-SGT Telescope

Image
Sony NEX-5 with Celestron C8 SGT Telescope Several people asked about the setup that was used on our NEX Astrophotography post. razor2277 posted his setup which is a NEX-5 used on a Celestron C8 SGT Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope. Here is what is needed to get beautiful photos of our universe and beyond... Celestron C8-SGT (Item # 11026-XLT) w/ dew shield (Item # 94009) and AC power supply (Item # 18778) Celestron Universal Piggyback Mount (for mounting camera on top with regular lenses) - Item # 93609 Celestron T-Adapter, (C5, 6, 8, 9-1/4, 11, 14) - Item # 93633-A KiwiFotos T-Mount Adapter LMA-TM_EM For Sony aNEX Cameras Celestron f/6.3 Reducer/Corrector - Item # 94175 from razor2277: so the T-Mount adapter is what attaches to the camera. The T-Adapter is what attaches to the telescope. The 2 adapters have threads to connect them togethe for prime focus. I also use a reducer which brings the aperture down to f/6.3 from f/10, and increases the FOV from 2000mm to 1280mm. So in the order...

NEX with Zeiss Super 16mm T1.3 Lens Arri Mount

Image
Sony NEX with Zeiss Super Speed 16mm f/1.2 Arri Bayonet Mount Lens Here is an interesting lens we ran into on eBay. It is a Carl Zeiss 16mm f/1.2 lens made for the Arriflex Super 16mm cameras. Breguet Camera of Hong Kong is offering this lens and has modified it for the NEX E-mount. This Super 16 lens will not cover the NEX-5's APS-C sensor and will cause vignetting as seen in the sample pictures below. This may not be a problem if you crop the image or use it for videos. This lens will work with NEX cameras via an Arri to PL to E-mount lens adapter which is included with the auction. Here is more information on the Carl Zeiss Super 16mm MKI lens from cinematechnic.com : Super 16mm Mk. I Set The 16mm set comprised of four Distagons: 9.5, 12, 16 and 25mm, f1.2, all with a photometric aperture of T1.3. These were the first 16mm prime lenses designed to cover Super 16mm format. The 9.5mm focal length covers the full S16 aperture, but is somewhat compromised in sharpness and ill...

NEX with Minolta 45mm at Devils Hockey Game

Image
Game Winning Shootout Goal - ISO200 1/320 f/4.0 We were lucky enough to get nice seats to the New Jersey Devils vs Anaheim Ducks. We brought the NEX-5 with a Minolta MD/SR to NEX/E-mount lens adapter the Minolta 45mm f/2 MD Rokkor-X. The combination easily fits into a jacket pocket. The 45mm f/2 on the NEX gives an equivalent FOV of 67.5mm, which allowed us to shoot the width of the ice from our seats. Here are a few shots from the night. Most of these are cropped which shows the lens' and NEX sensor capability. Minolta 45mm f/2 MD with Sony NEX Drop The Gloves - ISO200 1/60 f/5.6 Face Off Win - ISO200 1/250 f/5.6 Brodeur Kick Save - ISO200 1/250 f/4.0 Premature Celebration, Goal Recalled - ISO200 1/125 f/4.0 Overtime Shootout - ISO200 1/200 f/4.0 Sony NEX-5 with Minolta SR/MD mount adapter and Gordy leather strap

Sony NEX and PlayStation PlayMemories Image Viewer

Image
Sony PS3 PlayMemories Image Viewer Here is a quick video of NEX panoramas viewed with PlayMemories on the PlayStation 3 . PlayMemories supports 3D photos from the NEX, unfortunately our TV is not 3D capable. What we can show you is a panorama taken with the NEX-5 at Monza during the 2010 Italian Grand Prix. We have not printed out a panorama and PlayMemories is a great alternative of sharing ultra-wide photos from the NEX. The exif information of the photo can be seen by press the X button on the controller. 12416 x 1856 pixels is difficult to print but easy to view on a large screen. The video was taken with the older NEX-5 with a Contax 28mm f/2.8 Distagon.

NEX-5 Leica 50mm Summilux and High ISO

Image
I was lucky enough to catch a few drinks with another photo enthusiast who happen to have a Leica M8 and a chrome 50mm Summilux-M ASPH. I had my NEX-5 with a Voigtlander 35mm Ultron since I needed the speed whilst at the drinking hole. He was generous enough to slap the Summilux-M onto my Leica-Nex lens adapter and allowed me to use it. All the shots here were taken with the 50mm lens wide open at f/1.4, thus Summilux. The NEX-5 was set to Aperture Priority and ISO 3200 and with the dim lighting conditions at the bar forced the Shutter speed at 1/20th of a second. I would have preferred a shutter speed of 1/75 or higher (50mm x 1.5 crop factor) to keep camera movement at a minimum. The 50mm Summilux-M ASPH is a brick of a lens and I think the weight help stabilize the camera or was it the fear of dropping someone else's lens? The focusing was very well damped, a big difference from my Voigtlander. This made focusing a bit easier with the Leica. The shots were taken in RAW ...

Sony NEX-5 with Hasselblad 50mm Distagon FE

Image
Here is didjeridoo_tom's Sony NEX-5 cinema setup. He is using a Hasselblad 50mm f/2.8 Distagon with floating lens elements via a Hasselblad to EOS lens adapter, then an EOS to NEX E-mount lens adapter. The display of the NEX-5 is produced on the Sony CLMV55 portable 5" monitor via an HDMI cable. The Hasselblad 50mm Distagon FE provides excellent color correction close up and wide open. It was also the preferred lens for NASA space missions. Check out the photos of didjeridoo_tom 's NEX-5 with the Distagon T* 2.8/50 FE and samples from the combination.
