Sony A7r and NEX APS-C Lenses

Image
Carl Zeiss 32mm Touit Lens on Sony A7r Here are a bevy of autofocus lenses made for the Sony NEX system mounted on the new Sony A7r . The red boxes show a 1:1 or square aspect ratio and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The lenses have rear baffles which were not removed. Most of the prime lenses can provide a square image with a little bit of vignetting. 16:9 images show heavy vignetting, maybe we can extract a 2.35:1 Cinemascope / Panavision image with the A7r's 36 megapixels to play with. Sony NEX-6 Milky Way Time Lapse

Image
Milky Way Time Lapse by David H. Here are the settings David H. used on his NEX-6 with the help of PlayMemories Camera Apps. Camera settings: 16mm, ISO 1600, f3.5, 30sec.To extend the battery life I made a cover to put over the EVF to trick the camera. This turns off the light on the back of the main screen and conserves a lot of power. I did this using the Time Lapse app on 40 second intervals (10 seconds longer than exposure time to allow the camera to process images). Still trying to figure out if you can use the Time Lapse app in RAW format. Here is a video showing the NEX / Time Lapse App interface. NEX PlayMemories Camera Apps Time Lapse The Time Lapse App is available for $9.99 from the PlayMemories Camera App store. PlayMemories Camera Apps are compatible with Sony NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras.

New 20mm Pancake Lens for NEX Cameras

Image
New 20mm f/2.8 E-mount Lens for Sony NEX Cameras. Here is the new E-mount lens from Sony. The 20mm f/2.8 pancake lens, part number SEL20F28, from Sony is a native E-mount lens which means full compatibility, autofocus and auto-aperture, with all the NEX cameras. The 20mm pancake is 20mm in depth, the 16mm pancake is 22.5mm in depth. This means a slightly more compact package on NEX bodies, see the NEX-5R with 16mm below. The lens will provide an equivalent fov of 30mm when used on the APS-C sensor. The SEL20F28 20mm pancake lens will sell for $350 and will be available in April of this year. It makes the $250 16mm pancake seem like a bargain. Sony NEX 30mm Hood on 16mm Pancake Lens

Image
Sony 16mm Pancake with ALC-SH113 Hood Are you looking for more flare protection for your Sony 16mm f/2.8 E Pancake lens? The 16mm pancake does not come with a lens hood but Alphaman came up with a solution. He used the ALC-SH113 hood from the Sony NEX 30mm Macro Lens on the 16mm Pancake. The provides full coverage from the side and has a rectangular cutout in the middle. The 16mm and the ALC-SH113 hood does not cause vignetting. The combination looks great. Photos by Alphaman of 30mm Macro Hood on 16mm Pancake ALC-SH112, the flower petal hood for the 18-55mm OSS E-mount lens will also work with the 16mm pancake but it does not provide the same coverage as the ALC-SH113 hood. Thanks Alphaman!

Gravity Shots Takes the NEX-7 Flying

GravityShots.com has a new weapon in its UAV arsenal - it's the new Sony NEX-7. They mounted the NEX-7 on a Cinestar 6 hexacopter and took it for its maiden voyage around a lovely compound. Maybe trying to see if Santa was on the roof? The lens on the camera is the much maligned 16mm Pancake. The video settings were: "1080 60P, manual at 1/125, f9, iso400, auto focus, WB at cloudy and Vivid for scene." More Details About the NEX-C3

Silve Sony NEX-C3 with 16mm Pancake Lens Details about the new Sony Alpha NEX-C3, which replaces the NEX-3. There will be three (3) model designations: NEX-C3A with the 16mm Pancake Lens NEX-C3K with the 18-55mm Zoom OSS Lens NEX-C3D with both the 16mm Pancake and the 18-55mm Zoom Lens The APS-C sensor as written on the NEX-C3 body is 16.2 MP which produces a 4912 x 3264 pixel image. It now resides in a separate compartment closer to the center of the camera. The NEX-C3 will ship with the standard NEX flash and not the larger flash in this picture. This confirms that the older NEX-3 and NEX-5 can accept the larger flash. As we predicted the left and right direction of the wheel is now customizable. This gives us five buttons to to tailor the NEX-C3...

Sony NEX-5 Gaui Quad 330X UAV

Image
SeismicWave is testing out his new aerial photography UAV which is a TSH Gaui Hobby Corporation (Gaui) 330X-S 4 rotor flying machine with the Sony NEX-5 and the 16mm pancake lens. Here is what he wrote: I stuck the Sony NEX-5 on the Gaui quad. It maxed out the weight limit at 1070 grams. I am using the stock 16 mm f2.8 lens and a 3S 2500 mah pack. Video quality is pretty good though. My pack is not very good so internal resistance is pretty high. It is only using 1000 mah after 5 1/2 minutes. The Gaui 330X-S is only $400 which is fairly inexpensive for all this technology and the unique vantage point it provides for aerial photographers. We really need one of these UAVs for the NEX-5 just for the fact that it looks like a lot of fun to fly. J. Scholl shot this video with the Sony NEX-5 mounted on a Droidworx AD-6HL (Heavy Lift) UAV. The NEX-5 and the 16mm pancake lens provides high quality images at very minimal weight. Hopefully firmware v04 will allow us to shut off the lcd screen of the NEX when shooting to extend battery life. Here is our previous post of another NEX and microcopter in action . Sony NEX-3 Samsung NX100 Drop Test

Image
musteryee posted a video of the Sony NEX-3 and the Samsung NX100 in a drop test. The cameras were dropped on the bottom and the side at 50 cm (19.7 in), 100 cm (39.4 in), and 150 cm (59.1 in). The Sony NEX-3 did not survive the drop test on the side at 100 cm (39.4 in) while the NX100 was still functioning. The lesson of the story? Do not drop any electronic device but if you do and the angle is just right, it may survive. Use the wrist strap or neck strap, and a bag and keep your valuables safe. We are wondering if the more robust NEX-5 with the magnesium body would have done better. Kids don't try this at home.
