How to Open a7r III Raw Files with Lightroom

Image
As of now Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw does not officially support the new Sony a7r III raw files. Here is a workaround / hack to let us work with the new files before Adobe updates their software. We will need to change the exif information using exiftool, which can be downloaded here - https://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ Here is the key information Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw looks for in the exif info.  View the exif on your a7r iii raw file and you will see this. White Balance Fine Tune : 0 White Balance : Auto Sony Model ID : ILCE-7RM3  Multi Frame Noise Reduction : Off Picture Effect : Off We need to change that with exiftool to make Adobe think it's an a7r ii raw file. Here's the exiftool command. For single files exiftool -sonymodelid="ILCE-7RM2" RAW FILE For all the files in the directory exiftool -sonymodelid="ILCE-7RM2" -ext ARW -r DIRECTORY ...

Download Sony a7rIII Manual Preliminary

Image
This is the manual for the new Sony a7r III / mark 3 46mp full frame camera with touch screen. We think this is a preliminary copy since it does not match the menu of the cameras we played with at Photo Plus Expo. We still think it's enough to feed those waiting for their a7r III pre-orders. Download the a7r iii manual via Dropbox. So what comes in the box if you bought a body only a7r III ? Accessories included with Sony a7r III So here is the discrepancy in the manual, under Shoot / Drive Mode, Px. Shift Multi Shoot is missing. I hope the next revision will have better detail on Pixel Shift shooting. Here is the Shoot Mode / Drive 1 menu on a pre-production Sony a7r III showing the Pixel Shift option. Pre-order your a7r III from Amazon and support this site. In case the Dropbox link dies, here is the Google link for the a7r III owner's manual .

Sony a7r III Pixel Shift Multi Shooting Mode Impressions

Image
Sony a7r III in Pixel Shift Mode We had a chance to fondle the new Sony a7r mark III with the new pixel shift multi shooting mode. Pixel shift moves the sensor one pixel at a time to capture four frames. The four frames consist of the same image with a full red channel, two green channels, and one blue channel. The images must then be processed and combined in your pc via Sony Imaging Edge software. Pixel Shift Multi Shooting description from Sony. Pixel Shift Multi Shootingopens a new world of resolution Applying mechanisms and control technology of image stabilization, this new feature composites four separate pixel-shifted images that contain total data27 equal to approx. 169.6 million, or 42.4 million x 4 (RGGB), pixels to reproduce a single optimal still image of super-high resolution, detailed texture, balanced color, and realistic atmosphere, with minimal moiré and color artifacts. Leica Thambar-M 90 on Sony A7 Cameras

Image
Leica Thambar-M 90mm on Sony A7 by Kazuhiro ITOH Leica reintroduced their Thambar 90 f/2.2 lens this week. The look it produces is very distinctive, dreamlike image. Posted here is a gallery of Leica Thambar 90 images taken with the Sony A7 cameras via lens adapter. The 1935 designed Leica Thambar-M 90 can also be used in autofocus mode using the Techart Pro LM-EA7 adapter with the newest generation of Sony A7 cameras. From Leica: The new Thambar has almost entirely adopted the design of the original lens – featuring the same proportions, black paint finish and red and white aperture scales as its 1930s predecessor. The red scale applies when the center spot filter is in place, which diminishes the effective aperture of the lens – for example, from 2.2 to 2.3 when wide open. When working without the center spot filter, the white aperture scale is used. In order to retain its vintage appeal, the Thambar’s exterior has only been subtly adapted to reflect the pared-down character ...

Focus Stack Test with the Leica 60mm Elmarit-R

8 Images Blended Together. Here is the Lysudamuloa Red Jewel in full bloom. We wanted to try out focus stacking with the Leica 60mm Macro Elmarit-R. The aperture was set at f/5.6 which we assumed was optimal. The image above at 45˚ was a stack of 8 shots aligned and blended together with Photoshop. The Anther Cap of the Lysudamuloa Red Jewel  The image above is a crop of the 90˚ stack which was a 5 shot stack. Lysudamuloa Red Jewel  Lysudamuloa Red Jewel  Lysudamuloa Red Jewel

Save $1000 on the a7r II with Trade-In Bonus

Image
Sony a7r II with $200 Gift Card Here's our chance to save $1000+ on the Sony a7r II . Here's the math. Sony a7r II = $3198 Instant Rebate = -$300 Gift Card = -$200 Trade in Bonus = -$480 Trade in Value = -$?.?? Grand Total = $2,218 - TIV The a7r II's MSRP is $3,198. A trade in of an old interchangeable lens would surely get us to the $1000 savings mark. The trade-in bonus ends on April 1st but the $200 gift card from Adorama will probably go extinct first. Receive $480 bonus from Sony if you buy the a7r II above and you trade in a camera or a lens. I would probably add the 16-35mm f/4 lens which comes with a $100 gift card, a $100 instant rebate, and a $202.50 bonus - a $400 savings off MSRP. The lens will come in at $945 before your trade in value. And the 55mm f/1.8 lens which comes with a $50 gift card, a $100 instant rebate, and a $150 bonus - a $300 savings off MSRP. The 55mm Zeiss will cost $698 before your trade in value. ...

Olympus Infinity Point and Shoot vs Sony A7

Image
Windham Graves shows us how to create a new lens for your Sony E-mount camera from a film point and shoot. He harvests the lens from an Olympus Infinity camera which has a relatively fast 35mm f/2.8 lens. A Russian m39 lens tube with a helicoid is used to Frankenstein the final lens for the e-mount. Getting the Shot Sony A7r II vs 5d Mark III

Image
Bokeh Battle 85mm Zeiss Otus vs Sony G Master The video above from DigitalRev TV shows the advantage of electronic viewfinders found on Sony cameras. The evf betters optical viewfinders by providing a more accurate way to manual focus lenses. The Sony A7r II provides a magnified view for focusing. It also has focus peaking which highlights portions of the image that are in the focus zone. So getting the shot with the Otus is a much easier task with an EVF. Another advantage shown is that Zeiss only provides autofocus lenses for Sony - the Batis line. The A7r II had no problems locking focus with the 85mm G Master . Canon and Nikon shooters can only use the Otus and Milvus line, which Sony shooters have access to as well. Which do you prefer?

Sony A7r at Mardi Gras World New Orleans

Image
Face to face. We took a break from eating oysters in New Orleans and took a quick tour of Mardi Gras World. Mardi Gras World supports a third of the floats that are paraded on the days leading to Fat Tuesday in February. They are responsible for the design and upkeep of all the decorations on the floats. The tools at hand were the Sony A7r and the 40mm M-Rokkor. We shot in Aperture mode, seemingly stuck at f/2.4. Sharpness at f/2.4 is substantially better than wide open at f/2.0 on the Minolta CLE lens. Envious Flash. Larry, Curly, and Moe. Guardians. Cobra Ring. Artists in Residence 1.
