Sony a7r III Pixel Shift Multi Shooting Mode Impressions

Sony a7r III in Pixel Shift Mode

We had a chance to fondle the new Sony a7r mark III with the new pixel shift multi shooting mode. Pixel shift moves the sensor one pixel at a time to capture four frames. The four frames consist of the same image with a full red channel, two green channels, and one blue channel. The images must then be processed and combined in your pc via Sony Imaging Edge software.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting description from Sony.

Pixel Shift Multi Shootingopens a new world of resolution

Applying mechanisms and control technology of image stabilization, this new feature composites four separate pixel-shifted images that contain total data27 equal to approx. 169.6 million, or 42.4 million x 4 (RGGB), pixels to reproduce a single optimal still image of super-high resolution, detailed texture, balanced color, and realistic atmosphere, with minimal moiré and color artifacts. Images shot using this feature can be processed with the new Sony imaging software suite. The image sensor is moved in 1-pixel increments while shooting four sequential frames. Each pixel represents R, G, and B information.

Our initial impressions:
  • Pixel shift mode can be used with the self timer which makes sense since the camera has to be still for the four frames it takes.
  • Manual/Aperture/Shutter Priority Modes work with Pixel Shift. This means the camera can take four quick shots if required to minimize movement in the scene.
  • Bracketing feature does not work with Pixel Shift mode. One has to do this manually.
  • Exposure compensation works in Pixel Shift mode.
  • The four files transferred to our mobile device, using PlayMemories, during Pixel Shift were all full RGB. Not individual red, green, or blue channels.

What we don't know:

  • Will the new file be a RAW file that can be further processed in Capture One or Lightroom?
  • Will the software handle stitching of multiple Pixel Shift files?
  • Will Imaging Edge be available for Android or IOS?

New Sony imaging software suite

A new suite of imaging apps from Sony provides top-quality RAW development, convenient PC tethering, and efficient viewing/management. Live viewing on the computer screen with semitransparent reference overlay capability is available during tethered shooting. Focus points can be set from the computer. The new Pixel Shift Multi Shooting feature can also be used while the camera and PC are tethered, and the pixel-shifted images can be immediately composited and viewed.
