How to Open a7r III Raw Files with Lightroom

As of now Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw does not officially support the new Sony a7r III raw files. Here is a workaround / hack to let us work with the new files before Adobe updates their software. We will need to change the exif information using exiftool, which can be downloaded here -

Here is the key information Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw looks for in the exif info.  View the exif on your a7r iii raw file and you will see this.

White Balance Fine Tune : 0
White Balance : Auto
Sony Model ID : ILCE-7RM3
Multi Frame Noise Reduction : Off
Picture Effect : Off

We need to change that with exiftool to make Adobe think it's an a7r ii raw file.

Here's the exiftool command.
For single filesexiftool -sonymodelid="ILCE-7RM2" RAW FILEFor all the files in the directoryexiftool -sonymodelid="ILCE-7RM2" -ext ARW -r DIRECTORYAnd the exif will be revised…

Sony NEX-3 18-55 OSS Adobe Lens Profile

Paul G took the time and effort and created an Adobe Lens Profile for the Sony NEX-3 and the 18-55 OSS lens using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator.

Lens Profile Creator characterizes three common types of lens aberrations, namely the geometric distortion, the lateral chromatic aberration and the vignette. Download Paul G's Sony NEX-3 + 18-55 OSS lens profile: download link.Since Adobe does not support RAW files from Sony NEX cameras, you can only use the Lens Profile with JPGs to correct geometric distortion, lateral chromatic aberration and vignetting.

For now you will have to import the jpgs in Lightroom and you can apply the lens correction. I think adobe will very soon include raw support for the nex though. Click here to learn more about the Adobe Lens Profile Creator and how to use lens profiles.

Thanks Paul G!

Hopefully Adobe ACR will support Sony NEX RAW files soon and a Lens Profile for the 16mm pancake will be available as well.
