Sony A7 Mounted on the Rhinocam

sony a7r rhinocam vizelex 645 panorama

Sony A7 with Rhinocam (Ground glass removed)

Here's a video showing how to mount the Sony A7 camera onto a Vizelex Rhinocam. The Rhinocam was designed for e-mount NEX cameras. Due to the viewfinder location of the A7, there is interference when the camera us rotated to portrait mode for 645 shots. This is resolved by removing the ground glass found on the Rhinocam. It provides a quick view for framing only and does not affect the final image.

Sony A7r with Contax G 28mm Biogon Test Shots

sony a7r contax g 28mm

Manhattan from Brooklyn

We are still learning which lenses play well with the Sony A7r and we found one that's not so friendly. The Contax G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon, shown in our previous post, is a non-retrofocus rangefinder lens which means that the rear of the lens is closer to the film plane or sensor. This causes the light at the edges to hit the Sony's A7r full frame sensor at oblique angles which results in color casts. This happens with the Leica M9 and M240 but is corrected with in-camera with software. The color cast can also be corrected with CornerFix or Light Room's Flat Field Plug-in, discussed by Tobinators here. We did not correct the images here for color cast.

Apart from the color cast, the Contax G 28mm Biogon performed well. We love the sharpness, contrast, and color the lens and the Sony A7r sensor delivers. Most of the shots are at f/5.6 or f/8 as we tried for the sweet spot of the lens. The A7r was set to Aperture Priority as there was plenty of light to keep a fast shutter speed.

Cambo ACTUS - a compact view camera made for the Sony A7 cameras.

ACTUS is based on the X2 Pro View Camera System

The Cambo ACTUS is a view camera system with E-mount compatibility. This allows us to have tilt and shift movement using the Sony A7, a6000, or NEX cameras. Cambo has the X2 Pro which is made for DSLRs, the ACTUS is half the weight and around 40% less in size than the X2 Pro.

Pictures shown are not final.

Trainspotting with the 40mm M-Rokkor and Sony A7r

sony a7r 40mm m-rokkor leica

Here are some test shots with the Minolta 40mm f/2 M-Rokkor for the Minolta CLE. This is the multicoated version of the Leica 40mm Summicron-C. We used the very compact 40mm M-Rokkor walking around a local train museum with the Sony A7r via a Leica M lens adapter. The shots up to the handcart are all done at maximum aperture of f/2. Manual focus was very easy with using the viewfinder magnification of the A7r even in the mid-day sun. The mid-day sun also guaranteed high shutter speeds at ISO 100 and f/2. All the shots are handheld.

The shots below are at f/5.6 up to f/11. We need to test this lens more but the sweet spot is definitely at f/5.6.

The CSX 152 (GE AC4400CW diesel-electric locomotive) and the CSX 7305 (GE C40-8 [Dash 8]) was shot during the afternoon sun.

The lens has been great on the Minolta CLE and NEX-7 and it performs well on the full-frame A7r. The lightweight and compact 40mm M-Rokkor with a fairly fast f/2 aperture should always be considered for the A7 if you want to try Leica M lenses.

Sony A7r Weather Sealing Test with 28-70mm FE Kit Lens

Kai Wong of DigitalRev Plays with the Sony A7 Cameras

The new Sony A7 and A7r cameras are featured on Digital Rev with Kai Wong. The A7's 28-70mm FE Kit lens was used on the A7r and produced "stellar" shots. The A7 and A7r's focus systems were compared. The water resitance was also tested using the A7r and the 28-70mm kit lens. A Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux-M ASPH was used to show how adaptable the E-mount is. The focus peaking display was nicely featured. In conclusion, Kai was impressed with both cameras, "Sony has created a product of desire."

Sony A7 and A7r Hands On at PhotoPlus Expo

sony a7r lens adapter e-mount

Sony A7r with a Voigtlander 12mm Lens and Viewfinder

It was a very crowded Sony booth at PhotoPlus. The great thing was the Sony representatives were very accommodating to anyone who wanted to play with the new Sony A7 and A7r. We had our bag of lenses and was able to mount them all on the A7 and A7r - check out the 12mm viewfinder on the A7r above. The lenses include the following:

  • Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 Leica Thread Mount on a helicoid adapter.
  • Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron LTM.
  • Minolta 24mm f/2.8 Rokkor MD.
  • Contax G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon.
  • Contax Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar with the Metabones Speedbooster and the standard C/Y adapter.
  • Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit Distagon.
The cameras were pre-production and the use of memory cards to record the images was prohibited. We wanted to see if I could see immediate problems on the rear tilting lcd but none were glaring.  The only noticeable issue was color shift with the Contax G 28mm Biogon.  We're hoping that this can be remedied with the production models.

Below is the Contax 85mm Planar on a Metabones Speedbooster. As you can see it cannot cover the whole sensor but with APS-C mode on the A7 cameras the Speedbooster is still useable.

Sony A7r and a Contax 85mm Planar Lens via Speedbooster

The Voigtlander 35mm Ultron LTM was a nice surprise.  This lens gives the NEX-7 some problems with color shift but on the A7 this was not the case.  The few snaps that we took looked great on the rear lcd.

The Minolta 24mm f/2.8 MD provide a nice wide angle image on the Sony A7.  It felt nice and balance on the slightly larger frame of the Sony A7.

We were very excited to mount the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit on the new Sony A7.  We had the A7's APS-C lens detection off to see how much the Touit can cover the full frame sensor.  The lens has a plastic shroud to protect the rear element and this showed up in the shot below.  The Touit works perfectly fine in APS-C mode.

The RhinoCam allows us to use NEX E-mount cameras with medium format lenses. The RhinoCam has lens adapters for Pentax 645, Mamiya 645, or Hasselblad V lenses. The NEX is mounted on a shift mount while the lens is fixed. The NEX is then shifted to cover the image circle projected by the medium format lens. Each image is then stitched by an imaging software.

Here's an in-depth video walk through of the RhinoCam.

Sony NEX-7 Rear Button Focus

Figure 1. Rear Button aka AF/MF Button Controls Autofocus.

Here's a way to autofocus using the rear AF/MF button instead of the shutter button. You can then separate focus from locking exposure with the shutter button half press. This will also prevent the lens from prefocusing when in AF or DMF mode.

Setting up the NEX-7 to use AF/MF Rear Button Focus.
  • Set the camera to Manual Focus, Figure 2.
  • Set the AF/MF Control to HOLD, Figure 3.
  • Set the AF/MF Button to AF/MF Control, Figure 1.
  • Set the Function Button to Focus Settings, Figure 4. This will let us control the focus point via Flexible Spot. You can also use Center focus point then Recompose. The camera must be in MF or DMF mode, Figure 2., to use Focus Settings.
