NEX-7 Lens Resolution Tests via Imatest at LensRentals.com

Image
R.C. at LensRentals.com performed a test on several lenses on the NEX-7. The lenses comprised of the native E-mount lenses from Sony and Sigma. A Leica Summilux was also thrown into the mix since it's done well in previous Imatest challenges. The numbers below represent MTF-50 at aperture f/4. The NEX-7 was set at ISO 400 and each lens was manually focused and bracketed so that focus errors were eliminated. from Imatest. Device or system sharpness is measured as a Spatial Frequency Response (SFR), also called Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). MTF is the contrast at a given spatial frequency (measured in cycles or line pairs per distance) relative to low frequencies. The 50% MTF frequency correlates well with perceived sharpness— much better than the old vanishing resolution measurement, which indicated where the detail wasn’t. Now let's look at the test results at aperture f/4. Lens Max Avg Sony 16mm f/4 915 646 Sigma 19mm f/4 920 765 Sony 24mm f/4 1000

Penguins and the Sony NEX-VG20 Camcorder

Image
Kings of South Georgia by cotton coulson Here's a nice video shot with the Sony NEX-VG20 Camcorder in South Georgia Island with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions by Cotton Coulson. Here is what he has to say about the VG20: Using the Sony NEX VG-20, demonstrating what can be shot with this camera in remote regions. All taken with standard Sony lenses, edited with Final Cut X, no grading, wanted to show how the camera performs right out of the box. Remember also that this camera takes beautiful stills. The form factor is impressive. It's like shooting video with a Leica rangefinder camera. Only negative feedback is managing some of the controls off the LCD screen, especially in harsh weather conditions, but on the flip side, the camera is so portable, making video something fun to do again. Sony NEX-VG20 with Sony 18-200mm OSS Thanks Cotton !

Sony NEX-7 and the Shuttle Enterprise NYC Flyover

Image
Space Shuttle Enterprise with Lady Liberty Here's a few photos from the New York City flyover of the space shuttle Enterprise piggybacked on a Boeing 747. We had longer lenses available but the widest end of the Contax 35-70mm MMJ worked out best. The 747 flew above 1500 feet and a 50mm fov, Contax 35-70 @35mm, was great for the shot above. The images below are at the long end,70mm, which gave a 105mm fov. The NEX-7 was initially set on the tripod but the pilot and NASA did not want to cooperate with my framing - hand held shots worked better.

Sony NEX-7 Wired Shutter Release Mod

Image
Sony NEX-7 Wired Shutter Release by Trunk at GetHypoxic.com Trunk contacted us again with his new mod. This time it's a wired shutter release for the Sony NEX-7. It was about a year ago that we posted Trunk's wired shutter release for the Sony NEX-5 . If you are using the NEX-7 in modes other than P,S,A, or M the wireless Sony NEX Remote will not work and the Self-Timer is also inaccessible.  Trunk has the solution for the NEX-7.  He goes through a step by step procedure on modding the NEX-7 for a wired shutter release.  The process is very complex and will void your warranty.  Do it at your own risk or contact Trunk as he may offer the modification service.  Check out gethypoxic.com for Trunk's NEX-7 wired shutter release.  Here are some pictures by Trunk showing the insides of the NEX-7 and the finished product. Sony NEX-7 vs 5D Mark III vs D800 DxOMark Sensor Battle

Image
Let's see how the Sony NEX-7 's APS-C (23.5x15.6mm) sensor does against the latest generation of full frame (24x36mm) sensors. DxOMark rates the NEX-7's sensor at 81 and the new Canon 5d Mark III garnered the same score. The Nikon D800 's sensor, made by Sony, gets a score of 95 - the highest on DxOMark for a full frame camera. The NEX-7 provides a slight advantage in dynamic range against the 5d MkIII at low ISOs - 320 and under. Color depth is a push between the two cameras and the 5d MkIII's larger sensor and larger pixel pitch gives it the edge at high ISO shots. Take a closer look at the DxOMark comparison for yourself. Overall the NEX-7 is still one of the best APS-C sensors. It provides a great sensor in a neat versatile little package.

Sony NEX-7 Dial Wheel Lock Option?

Image
Have you finished reading the 211 page manual for the Sony NEX-7 yet? You may have run into this Dial / Wheel Lock option in the Setup Menu and tried to guess what it was. We had no clue until we ran into the video above by SonyAlphaSupport. The Dial / Wheel Lock option can be found on the 1st screen (top) of the Setup Menu. It can be set to All, Control Wheel, or Off . When it is set to All, the Tri-Navi controls can be locked by holding down the Navigation Button of the NEX-7 for around 2 seconds. This means that whatever the Tri-Navi controls are controlling cannot be accidentally changed without unlocking them. The unlocking process is the same as the locking process. Dial / Wheel Lock option in NEX-7 Setup Menu A more useful option might be setting the Dial / Wheel Lock to Control Wheel . The Control Wheel is usually the ISO dial so it can be locked and unlocked by holding down the Navigation Button for around 2 seconds. A lock icon shows up on the top right of the sc

The 135mm Lens Battle Combatants Part 1 for Larger Pictures Here is the second part of our NEX-7 135mm Lens Battle. Part 1 discussed 135mm lens handling on the NEX-7. We tested three prime lenses (Canon 135/3.5 LTM, Konica 135/3.5, Minolta 135/3.5 MD) and two zoom lenses (Canon 70-200/2.8L, Olympus 75-150/4). The zoom lenses were set at 135mm approximately. The lenses tested are around $100 or less with the exception of the Canon zoom. The shots were taken at wide open aperture (f/2.8, f/3.5, or f/4) and the at f/8. We have labeled each sample a color and a number. The NEX-7 or lens was on a tripod, ISO100, and JPG Fine output. The samples below are arranged as follows: One is shot wide open. Sony NEX-7 135mm Lens Battle Part 1

Image
Composite of Four 135mm Lenses at f/8 with the NEX-7 Here is a first part of our 135mm focal length test used on the Sony NEX-7 . This gives us an equivalent FOV of 202mm. We don't really shoot much at this focal length but we wanted to see how the NEX-7 and the various 135mm lenses worked with each other. These lenses are around the $100 mark with the exception of the Canon zoom. The lenses tested are: Canon 135mm f/3.5 LTM Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L EF Konica Hexanon 135mm f/3.5 AR Minolta 135mm f/3.5 MD Olympus 75-150mm f/4 Auto Zoom First let's rate the handling. The Minolta and the Konica are the lightest of the group. This makes them the easiest to handle. The Olympus zoom is next and is most versatile being a zoom lens but it is longer than the Konica and Minolta. The Canon LTM is heavier than the first three but is the most compact in size. The aperture ring is at the end of the barrel and when adjusted, it also adjusts the focus. The Canon EOS zoom is the biggest
