Sony NEX-5 Gaui Quad 330X UAV

Image
SeismicWave is testing out his new aerial photography UAV which is a TSH Gaui Hobby Corporation (Gaui) 330X-S 4 rotor flying machine with the Sony NEX-5 and the 16mm pancake lens. Here is what he wrote: I stuck the Sony NEX-5 on the Gaui quad. It maxed out the weight limit at 1070 grams. I am using the stock 16 mm f2.8 lens and a 3S 2500 mah pack. Video quality is pretty good though. My pack is not very good so internal resistance is pretty high. It is only using 1000 mah after 5 1/2 minutes. The Gaui 330X-S is only $400 which is fairly inexpensive for all this technology and the unique vantage point it provides for aerial photographers. We really need one of these UAVs for the NEX-5 just for the fact that it looks like a lot of fun to fly. Sony NEX-5 Droidworx Microcopter UAV

J. Scholl shot this video with the Sony NEX-5 mounted on a Droidworx AD-6HL (Heavy Lift) UAV. The NEX-5 and the 16mm pancake lens provides high quality images at very minimal weight. Hopefully firmware v04 will allow us to shut off the lcd screen of the NEX when shooting to extend battery life. Here is our previous post of another NEX and microcopter in action . Sony NEX-3 Samsung NX100 Drop Test

Image
musteryee posted a video of the Sony NEX-3 and the Samsung NX100 in a drop test. The cameras were dropped on the bottom and the side at 50 cm (19.7 in), 100 cm (39.4 in), and 150 cm (59.1 in). The Sony NEX-3 did not survive the drop test on the side at 100 cm (39.4 in) while the NX100 was still functioning. The lesson of the story? Do not drop any electronic device but if you do and the angle is just right, it may survive. Use the wrist strap or neck strap, and a bag and keep your valuables safe. We are wondering if the more robust NEX-5 with the magnesium body would have done better. Kids don't try this at home.

Sony NEX-VG10 Sigma 50-500mm Bigma Video

Image
Here is some footage that Steve N shot with his NEX-VG10 and the Sigma 50-500mm ultra zoom lens aka Bigma. The Bigma used is a Nikon mount so it does have an aperture ring but focusing is all done manually. Steve points out: ...Sony hasn't equipped the VG10 with focus confirmation or focus assist: there is no peaking or image enlargement which would help immensely when working with MF lenses...perhaps a firmware update can address this! Sony stated at Photokina that they will be working with third party lens makers so we can expect focus confirmation, and aperture control on adapted lenses. Sony NEX and Steadicam Merlin

Image
NEX-VG10 on Steadicam Merlin by cheesuwen cheesuwen writes: The arrival of the NEX10 with its weight is just perfect for the Merlin. With a LitePanels MicroPro on it, it weighs just slightly above 1.3kg. A weight I can sustain without the help of the Steadicam Arm and Vest. Here are a couple of videos from eiji1783 using the Sony NEX-5 with the Tiffen Steadicam Merlin . It's amazing how steady the videos look while he's chasing kids at play.

Sony NEX LA-EA1 Alpha Lens Autofocus Videos

Image
Here are first two videos showing us the NEX autofocusing a Sony Alpha 30mm f/2.8 Macro DT with SAM , Sony Alpha 18-55 DT SAM and a Sony Alpha 35mm f/1.8 DT with SAM via the LA-EA1 lens adapter . This is now possible with the new NEX Firmware Version 03 . The first video, with the SAL35F18, shows that it's not the fastest at locking focus but it's acceptable. The 2nd video shows the SAL1855 focusing at an acceptable speed. The 3rd video, with the SAL35F28 Macro, shows the worst of it hunting to lock focus. It may be because of the aperture and the available light but we can't be certain. Check out our post with manual focus samples with the DT SAL30F28 Macro. Spocom Girls Video by the Sony NEX-5

Image
Abbot W. tried out his new Sony NEX-5 and the 18-55mm OSS kit lens on a Glidecam HD2000 Stabilizer . He stated that the HD2000, rated for 2-6lb cameras, may be overkill for the lightweight Sony NEX-5. We are not sure if OSS was turned off as is suggested when stabilizers are used, like tripods and glidecams. Enjoy the scenery. Thanks Abbott W. !
