Sony NEX-5 vs Leica M8

Image
Here is another shootout comparing the Sony NEX-5 and the Leica M8. The lens used was the Zeiss 18mm f/4.0 ZM . The Sony 16mm Pancake was also used so we can compare the Zeiss against it. All shots are by Boris from Wild-Places.com . NEX-5 vs Leica M8 vs Canon 5d Mark II

Image
Let's see how the Sony NEX-5 does against a couple of heavyweights, the Leica M8 and the Canon 5d Mark II. The test is not scientific since different lenses were used by two different photographers. Light, post processing, etc are also factors that has to be accounted for variations in the images. Let's see what a camera one quarter the cost of the other two can produce. Here is Neuschwanstein Castle from the perspective of the Sony NEX-5 and the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C Biogon . Here is what the Leica M8 produces with the same lens at f/8.0. Here is what the Canon EOS 5d Mark II and the Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro Planar at f/8.0 sees. The Canon 5dII is used again but with a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar at f/8.0. Here are some pictures of Neuschwanstein Castle taken with the Sony NEX-5. Sony NEX-5 Leica APO Telyt-R 400mm Lens

Image
Sony NEX-5 with Leica APO Telyt-R 400mm f/2.8 If you want an easy to handle 600mm equivalent focal length camera setup try the Leica APO Telyt-R 400mm f/2.8 with the Sony NEX-5 since the lens actually has a handle. A lens adapter is used from the Leica-R lens mount to the Sony's E-mount. Also to ensure you can hear the birds in the video try the ECM-SST1 Compact Stereo Microphone for the NEX. Thanks Khun K !

Sony NEX MS Super Triplet Perar Lens

Image
MS Optical Super Triplet Perar photo by jonmanjiro Here is the smallest available lens for the Leica M mount and Luca A. has mounted it on his NEX-5. It is the MS Optical Super Triplet Perar Lens with a 35mm focal length, 52.5mm equivalent on the NEX and a maximum aperture of f/3.5. A Leica M to Sony E-mount adapter was used. Super Triplet Perar Lens Extended on the NEX-5. Super Triplet Perar Lens Collapsed. For reference: Super Triplet Perar on the Leica M8. Here are the key features of the Perar lens: Very high optical quality triplet formula lens. Ultra compact design, weight 75g, collapsible (4.2 height when collapsed). Premium quality Tantalum glass, superior to Trium and Lanthanum glass with best refractive qualities. Refined triplet design with two double thickness positive lenses, superior to Tessar design. Sony NEX Leica 28mm Elmarit-R via Tilt Adapter

Image
icie sent us an email sharing his images from his recent trip with the Sony NEX-5 and a Leica 28 f/2.8 Elmarit-R via a Kipon tilt adapter, which we posted about previously . Here is a quick review from icie on his experience using the NEX and a manual focus lens. While the lens is not the best ever, most notably due to its chromatic aberration, it is pretty sharp wide open, and also the manual control over the aperture meant I could use the NEX-5’s handheld twilight mode stopped down at aperture values like f/8 (with the electronic lenses, the mode automatically sets it to the widest possible aperture, with no option to change it). Overall, it was quite interesting to shoot a week with manual focus, and of course I missed a lot of shots since I was not used to it. However, it is a truly useful skill to develop, and i did enjoy the tactile control over the lens functions. Sony NEX with a Voigtlander 35mm Nokton

Image
Here is another Nokton on the Sony NEX. This time it's the Cosina Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 Nokton (Leica M) mounted on the Sony E-mount. The lens seems almost designed for the NEX with it's compact body (1.12" / 28.5 mm), 35mm focal length (52mm equivalent), and large aperture at 1.4. Here was our post on the CV 50mm f/1.1 Nokton on the NEX. from latteblue from chiif from 808 Thanks latteblue, chiif, and 808!

Sony NEX-5 with a Voigtlander 50mm Nokton

SeattleSteve posted some sample photos from his NEX-5 with a Cosina Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 Nokton. If you want to play in low light and don't have the Leica Noctilux handy, the CV Nokton is the way to go. You will need a Leica M to Sony NEX (E-mount) adapter to use the CV 50mm Nokton on the Sony NEX. Sony NEX-5 with a Nokton vs a Leica M8 with a Summicron 50 here are some photos taken by SeattleSteve with the Nokton 50. Thanks for the photos SeattleSteve!
