This is not really fair: two completely different cameras.
ReplyDeleteAnd also: if you add the Leica lens to the NEX-7, which you did, you would have to pay twice the price.
Eh.. Unfair? It's just a comparison. I didn't see any conclusion drawn. Perhaps I should read the few lines again if the article upsets you that much...
ReplyDeleteThat Zeiss can lose weight it is not even stabilized take it to Jenny Craig
ReplyDeletePlease note that the Leica 35 f/2 lens is 340g while the Zeiss 24 f/1.8 lens is 224g. Looks can be deceiving.
ReplyDeleterishio, the 35 'cron weighs 255g in black annodized aluminium form, and 340g in chromed brass form.
ReplyDeleteThe Nex has a *minimum* flange back distance of 18mm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance), which is smaller than Leica's M mount. Nex lenses could be much smaller, but for the moment at least they seem to be adapting lenses to E mount rather than designing them from scratch.
Excellent comparison... thanks! Great to see side by side.
ReplyDeleteOf note:
The NEX thickness of grip is virtually equal to the entire Leica thickness. The size of the Zeiss is an optical illusion, basically only protruding from the point of that notch on rear of lens. Plus the NEX mount is on the outside of the camera. The combo is not as large as it seems by comparison. Add hoods to both lenses and the size differences are even less.
The weight differences are incredible. I'm shocked to see the NEX combo coming in at about 1 pound. That's fantastic for carrying around all day.
Thanks for the comparison.
This article looks familiar, here's why.

from Luminous Landscapes: There is no question (to my eyes at least) that the Sony sensor out-resolves the Leica using the same lens. The 50mm Summilux f/1.4 ASPH is one of the finest lenses of its focal length. What we are seeing is that this lens can out-resolve the M9's 18MP sensor, because the 24MP Sony sensor clearly shows better resolution of fine detail even though the M9 does not have an AA filter, and the NEX-7 does.
ReplyDeleteAny word on when the NEX7 will be available - was told the floods in Thailand stopped production?
ReplyDeleteThey are slowly coming in but it won't be until April that they will be readily available.
