NEX Canon EOS Lens Aperture Control

Sony NEX-5 with Canon EF / EOS Lens Adapter with Aperture Control by Kipon

One problem with using Canon EF / EOS lenses on the Sony NEX is that there is no aperture ring and there is no way to control how much light the lens allows in. EOS / EF Lenses come off the Canon EOS body with the aperture locked wide open, unless you do the DOF preview trick.

The engineers at Kipon created a solution for this problem by introducing their own aperture blades and a ring to control the aperture for their Canon EOS / EF Lens to Sony NEX E-mount Adapter. The Kipon aperture ring goes from 1 (wide open) to 6 and beyond (stopped down). We are not sure if the 1 (wide open) setting is big enough for the the large aperture EF lenses (f/1.2).

The adapter will not work on these lenses: Canon EF-S 10-22mm; EF-S 15-85mm; EF-S 17-55mm; EF-S 17-85mm; EF-S 18-55mm; EF-S 18-135mm; EF-S 18-200mm; EF-S 55-250mm; EF-S 60mm.

If you have one of these adapters please send us a review and some photos. If you want to shoot wide open, you can use a regular Canon EOS / EF to Sony NEX lens adapter.

  1. This will not work. The aperture is specifically placed within the lens, where ever that may be, during its design. This item will merely vignette the image. Casting shadows along the sides of the image. It will not alter the DOF or actual f/stop of the lens, which is what you would want.

  2. I tried out this adapter on an olympus Pen and it works very well. With all sorts of primes I was trying out. The aperture does work to control the depth of field and very well. No vignetting or shadowing as electronbee has speculated, although the Pen is smaller than the APS-C sensor, the lenses are designed for a much larger format to begin with.

I'm deciding between the EPL2 or the NX3/5 and will pick this adapter up likely. I know it works for the Pen at the very least.

  3. +1 to Lam. Think of pancake lens - the adapter is wider for sure. Hence aperture is far enough not to cause vignetting.
