Sony NEX Birger EOS Lens Adapter

Image
Birger EOS Adapter on Sony NEX-FS100 NXCAM DSLR News Shooter was at National Association of Broadcasters 2011 Convention in Las Vegas and was shown the Birger Engineering Canon EOS to Sony NEX E-mount adapter prototype. The Birger adapter allows for full control of aperture and focusing of EOS lenses by any NEX camera. Canon IS (Image Stabilization) will also be supported by the adapter. Unfortunately this wasn't shown in the video since most videographers use manual focus. A Follow Focus unit which allows for remote control of the EOS lens' aperture and focusing will also be available as an accessory from Birger. The Birger EOS to NEX adapter also has a graphical user interface which shows the status of the EOS lens. The Birger Engineering Canon EOS to Sony NEX adapter will be around $700 and will be released in the end of May. The Follow Focus unit will be released in the summer and will be about $700 as well. Birger Engineering is also working on a Nikon lens controller, whi

Sony NEX Aperture Control for Canon EOS Lenses

Image
Conurus has developed the electronic interface between a Sony NEX body and a Canon EOS / EF lens. This allows the aperture of a Canon EOS lens to be controlled by the Sony NEX. Normally Canon EOS lenses are at minimum aperture when they are not on a Canon body. The lenses do not have aperture rings and when used with an adapter on a Sony NEX body , the aperture cannot be changed. This Conurus system changes that. Hopefully they can miniaturize the system. Sony NEX-3 with Conurus Canon Aperture Controller Conurus specializes in converting Contax N autofocus lenses for use with Canon EOS systems.

NEX-5 vs Leica M8 vs Canon 5d Mark II

Image
Let's see how the Sony NEX-5 does against a couple of heavyweights, the Leica M8 and the Canon 5d Mark II. The test is not scientific since different lenses were used by two different photographers. Light, post processing, etc are also factors that has to be accounted for variations in the images. Let's see what a camera one quarter the cost of the other two can produce. Here is Neuschwanstein Castle from the perspective of the Sony NEX-5 and the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 C Biogon . Here is what the Leica M8 produces with the same lens at f/8.0. Here is what the Canon EOS 5d Mark II and the Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro Planar at f/8.0 sees. The Canon 5dII is used again but with a Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar at f/8.0. Here are some pictures of Neuschwanstein Castle taken with the Sony NEX-5. NEX Canon EOS Lens Aperture Control

Image
Sony NEX-5 with Canon EF / EOS Lens Adapter with Aperture Control by Kipon One problem with using Canon EF / EOS lenses on the Sony NEX is that there is no aperture ring and there is no way to control how much light the lens allows in. EOS / EF Lenses come off the Canon EOS body with the aperture locked wide open, unless you do the DOF preview trick. The engineers at Kipon created a solution for this problem by introducing their own aperture blades and a ring to control the aperture for their Canon EOS / EF Lens to Sony NEX E-mount Adapter. The Kipon aperture ring goes from 1 (wide open) to 6 and beyond (stopped down). We are not sure if the 1 (wide open) setting is big enough for the the large aperture EF lenses (f/1.2). Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L Wide Open Here are the Kipon Canon EOS / EF to Sony NEX E-mount lens adapter photos. It is available through eBay auctions . Sony NEX-5 vs Canon Rebel T2i 550d

Image
Fontaine V put up the smaller sensored Canon EOS Rebel T2i aka 550d against the Sony NEX-5 to see which one would be a more ideal travel companion. As you can see from the photos below, the Sony NEX-5 provides slightly more compact package. The NEX-5 and the E 18-200mm OSS travel kit is also more robust with a mostly metal construction compared to the polycarbonate clad Rebel T2i and EF-S 18-200mm lens. Let's see who wins the weight loss battle between the Sony NEX and the Canon Rebel T2i : Canon Rebel T2i (550d) 1.17 lb (530 g) + Canon EF-S 18-200mm lens 1.31 lb (595 g) = 2.48 lb (1.12 kg) Sony NEX-5 0.63 lb (287 g) + Sony E 18-200mm OSS 1.16 lb (524 g) = 1.79 lb (0.81 kg) The Sony NEX-5 and 18-200mm OSS lens wins by being 39% (0.69 lb, 313 g) lighter than the Canon competitor. The bigger sensor in the smaller package wins. You can also get the E 18-200 OSS with the Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam . Thanks Fontaine V !

Sony NEX-3 Arax 80mm Tilt Shift Lens

Here's a video taken with the NEX-3 and the MC Arax 80mm f/2.8 tilt and shift lens. The lens is adapted on the NEX via an Canon EOS adapter. The lens gives us a nice classic look. You can also see the "miniature faking" effect of the tilt feature of the lens. thanks singlag !

Sony NEX Canon EOS Lens Adapter

Image
Here is RJ Adapter's Sony NEX E-mount to Canon EOS EF Lens adapter. We can now use Canon EOS EF and EF-S lenses. But it will only shoot at maximum aperture. A trick to set it at a different aperture is to hold down the DOF preview button, on a Canon EOS body, while removing the lens at the same time - use at your own risk. This also opens up a world of possibilities since there are EOS lens adapters for many manual lenses including Contax/Yashica, Leica-R, Olympus Zuiko, Pentax Takumar, and the list goes on... The tripod mount/feet is a very smart idea, the Sony LA-EA1 E-mount to Sony Alpha has one as well. Sony NEX-5 Sensor Beats Canon 7d - DxOMark

Image
DxOMark tested the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 and found both to be more than capable. DxOMark found that the sensors showed excellent color depth, dynamic range, and low-light ISO performance. The NEX-5 topped the Canon EOS 7d dslr (by a slight margin), Olympus PEN E-P2, Panasonic Lumix GH1, and the Sony Alpha 450. Here is DxOMark's disclaimer: Disclaimer: This dxomark review evaluates only the selected camera’s RAW sensor performance metrics (i.e., Color Depth, Dynamic Range, and Low-Light ISO), and should not be construed as a review of the camera’s overall performance, as it does not address such other important criteria as image signal processing, mechanical robustness, ease of use, flexibility, optics, value for money, etc. While RAW sensor performance is critically important, it is not the only factor that should be taken into consideration when choosing a digital camera.
