Focus Stack Test with the Leica 60mm Elmarit-R

8 Images Blended Together.

Here is the Lysudamuloa Red Jewel in full bloom. We wanted to try out focus stacking with the Leica 60mm Macro Elmarit-R. The aperture was set at f/5.6 which we assumed was optimal. The image above at 45˚ was a stack of 8 shots aligned and blended together with Photoshop.

Save $1000 on the a7r II with Trade-In Bonus

sony a7r ii trade in bargain coupon

Sony a7r II with $200 Gift Card

Here's our chance to save $1000+ on the Sony a7r II. Here's the math.

  • Sony a7r II = $3198
  • Instant Rebate = -$300
  • Gift Card = -$200
  • Trade in Bonus = -$480
  • Trade in Value = -$?.??
  • Grand Total = $2,218 - TIV

The a7r II's MSRP is $3,198. A trade in of an old interchangeable lens would surely get us to the $1000 savings mark. The trade-in bonus ends on April 1st but the $200 gift card from Adorama will probably go extinct first.

sony trade in program

Receive $480 bonus from Sony if you buy the a7r II above and you trade in a camera or a lens.

I would probably add the 16-35mm f/4 lens which comes with a $100 gift card, a $100 instant rebate, and a $202.50 bonus - a $400 savings off MSRP. The lens will come in at $945 before your trade in value.

And the 55mm f/1.8 lens which comes with a $50 gift card, a $100 instant rebate, and a $150 bonus - a $300 savings off MSRP. The 55mm Zeiss will cost $698 before your trade in value.

Olympus Infinity Point and Shoot vs Sony A7

Windham Graves shows us how to create a new lens for your Sony E-mount camera from a film point and shoot. He harvests the lens from an Olympus Infinity camera which has a relatively fast 35mm f/2.8 lens. A Russian m39
lens tube with a helicoid is used to Frankenstein the final lens for the e-mount.

Have RX1 will Travel.

sony rx1 usa travel video

sony rx1

We have always been intrigued with the diminutive Sony RX1. In our minds it's the perfect travel camera, well except for our propensity for the 50mm focal length. Here's a video in 4K resolution conjured up by Mr. Rozenman about his west coast trip with his wife. The video is composed of 16,500 pictures taken with the RX1 handheld.

Yet Another USA Travel Video by Ofer Rozenman

For those looking to go on the wide side, here's a Sony RX1R with the 0.75X Ultra Wide Converter which gives an effective FOV of 26mm.

How To Install OpenMemories AppStore

install sony openmemories app store

OpenMemories App Shown on Camera's Application Tab

DHI Enterprises shows us how to install a third party application for Sony Cameras which support the PlayMemories Camera Apps. The third party OpenMemories AppStore can now be installed using the same method shown.

WARNING

from the OpenMemories AppStore developer:
Is it safe?

This is an experiment in a very early stage. All information has been found through reverse engineering. Even though everything worked fine for our developers, it could cause harm to your hardware. If you break your camera, you get to keep both pieces. We won't take any responsibility.

However, this seems to be safer than tampering with your camera firmware directly. We're just interacting with the isolated Android subsystem. Apps you install this way can be uninstalled in the applications manager. In the worst case, a factory reset of the camera clears all data on the Android partitions.

How To Install OpenMemories AppStore on your Sony Camera

  • Set Camera USB Connection to MTP Mode.
  • Turn Camera Off.
  • Connect Camera to Computer via USB cable and turn on Camera.
  • Using Internet Explorer or Safari, go to https://sony-pmca.appspot.com/apps.
  • Click on OpenMemories: AppStore by ma1co.
  • Click on Get Camera Info to ensure you have a proper USB connection.
  • Click on Install OpenMemories: AppStore

You should now see the OpenMemories AppStore in your Cameras Applications Tab.

If you don't want to risk your camera's warranty try the Official Sony PlayMemories AppStore, https://www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/.

Read more about the OpenMemories at their github page and start developing your own apps for Sony Cameras.

Getting the Shot Sony A7r II vs 5d Mark III

Bokeh Battle 85mm Zeiss Otus vs Sony G Master

The video above from DigitalRev TV shows the advantage of electronic viewfinders found on Sony cameras. The evf betters optical viewfinders by providing a more accurate way to manual focus lenses. The Sony A7r II provides a magnified view for focusing. It also has focus peaking which highlights portions of the image that are in the focus zone. So getting the shot with the Otus is a much easier task with an EVF.

Another advantage shown is that Zeiss only provides autofocus lenses for Sony - the Batis line. The A7r II had no problems locking focus with the 85mm G Master. Canon and Nikon shooters can only use the Otus and Milvus line, which Sony shooters have access to as well.

Red Hook Crit Brooklyn No. 9 with the NEX-7.

sony nex-7 zeiss planar brooklyn red hook crit

We took the subway down to Red Hook - Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which is definitely a place for bikes since the nearest station is a mile a way. We had a nice compact setup with the Sony NEX-7 and the Contax 50mm Planar via the Metabones Speed Booster. The Speed Booster effectively gave us an f/1.0 lens with a 55mm focal length.

sony nex-7 zeiss planar brooklyn red hook crit

We have some static shots but it takes away from the sensation of speed that the women were achieving on the track. Above is the lead pack during the race. We only had 2 minutes between each lap until we saw them again.

It's always fun to watch the Red Hook Crit even though it was cooler than usual. We did pretty well with a manual focus lens during a sporting event. I wonder what the Sony A6300 with its advanced autofocus tracking can manage.
